TCA Awards: 'Friday Nights Lights' voted program of the year
It's a good day in Dillon."Friday Night Lights," the just-concluded series that was beloved by the few who watched over its five-season run, was voted program of the year by the Television Critics Assn. at its annual awards ceremony Saturday night.The NBC skein, which needed the help of DirecTV to stay alive for its last three seasons, starred Kyle Chandler as a high school football coach Eric Taylor and Connie Britton as his wife and guidance counselor, Tami.AMC's "Mad Men" took home top drama while ABC's "Modern Family" was voted best comedy. New-program honors went to HBO's fantasy series "Game of Thrones."For individual achievement, Jon Hamm won the drama category for "Mad Men" while Ty Burrell and Nick Offerman tied in comedy for their respective roles in "Modern Family" and "Parks and Recreation.""The Amazing Race" was tabbed top reality show, "Sesame Street" for youth programming and "Sherlock" for movies, miniseries and specials. "Restrepo" was best in the news and information category.The TCA's Heritage Award, for the cultural and social impact a program has on society, was given to "The Dick Van Dyke Show." Series creator Carl Reiner was scheduled to be on hand to receive the award, along with co-stars Rose Marie and Larry Mathews.The org's Career Achievement Award was presented to Oprah Winfrey, who just ended her iconic talkshow after a 25-year run.
